The From the Big Apple to the Big Easy concerts were held in New York City at both Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall on this day in 2005. The purpose was to raise funds for the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. (The Big Easy is a nickname for New Orleans and the Big Apple is a nickname for New York City.) The list of New Orleans musicians who performed includes: the Neville Brothers, the Meters, Rebirth Brass Band, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Allen Toussaint, Clarence “Frogman” Henry, Irma Thomas, The Dixie Cups, Buckwheat Zydeco, Dave Bartholomew, Trombone Shorty and Kermit Ruffins. Among the non-NOLA musicians who performed were: Jimmy Buffett, Bette Midler, Elton John, Elvis Costello, John Fogerty, and Simon & Garfunkel.

On this day in 1990, Rounder released the first two of its planned five Meters CDs, a reissue of “Look-Ka Py Py” and a collection of previously-unreleased recordings titled “Good Old Funky Music.” Ultimately, Rounder only ended up releasing three Meters discs. (For some reason the right and left channels were reversed on “Look-Ka Py Py” compared to the original vinyl version of that LP.
